The Root System:
a private, 6-month mentorship for highly sensitive people.
Rooted in the living world, built from the inside out, and guided by gentle joy. Become Singularly Sensitive on your terms, held by nature.
Six months. Monthly 1:1 mentoring and forest therapy. A return to yourself.
The Root System might be for you if…
You feel the cost of living inside systems that weren't built for the way you're wired. You've outgrown frameworks that asked you to shrink — but you haven't yet found what fits instead.
You're making an impact in quiet, deep ways, and still wondering if it counts. You're holding a vision you haven't fully spoken yet, even to yourself.
You're not burned out from laziness or lack of commitment. You're exhausted from the ongoing work of contorting yourself into spaces that were never meant to hold you.
If any of that landed — you're in the right place.
There’s nothing wrong with your sensitivity. Nature embraces it.
What's wrong is the context you've been expected to function inside.
You've been taught to regulate yourself in environments that are inherently dysregulating. To translate your depth into something more palatable. To override your instincts in favor of speed, output, and certainty.
That's not thriving. It's adaptation. And adaptation, over time, becomes self-abandonment.
A different way of moving through the world is possible. Not louder. Not more optimized. More attuned. More rooted. More genuinely yours.
Sensitivity — real sensitivity — is not fragility. It’s pattern recognition. Relational intelligence. The ability to feel into systems, not just operate within them.
These are incredible capacities. But they only come alive when they are rooted somewhere real — when you have permission to feel what you feel, know what you know, and act from there. And when you have the right kinds of supports to hold you in the process.
That's what this mentorship offers you.
Are you ready to become Singularly Sensitive?
The Heart of the Root System:
Four Relationships Navigated with Gentle Joy
We Become Singularly Sensitive By Rooting into Four Kinds of Relationships:
With the more-than-human world — Nature as your regulator, teacher, and mirror. Through monthly guided forest therapy immersions, you build a living relationship with the land — one that changes how you hear yourself.
With yourself — Rebuilding the self-trust that extractive systems have eroded. Learning to hear your own signals again, and to live from the inside out.
With a mentor — Being witnessed and guided by someone who has walked this terrain. Not coached toward optimization, but companioned through transformation.
With kindred spirits — Finding others who are building something different alongside you. Visibility here is not exposure. It is rooted presence.
Gentle Joy is the Compass to Creating Your Authentic Path:
We learn to navigate these four relationships by developing practices that help us to notice and cultivate gentle joy: that quiet, internal sense of contentment, peace, and alignment that tells you, yes, this is right, this is meant for me.
For sensitive people, gentle joy is the compass that guides us to a meaningful, sustainable lifestyle.
Gentle joy can help you tune out the pressures of the world that we’ve internalized from living in extractive systems like patriarchy and capitalism. It supports you in knowing what’s right for you and choosing it in this season of your life, given the context in which you live.
With the support and care from these relationships, you’ll gain a deeper trust that gentle joy is guiding you to make an impact on the world.
Forest Therapy: The Missing Piece for HSPs
Forest therapy is a slow, sensory, relational practice. Originally developed from the Japanese tradition of Shinrin-yoku (forest bathing), it invites you into a genuine and reciprocal relationship with the natural world.
Each session is gentle and sensory-rich, guided by a series of invitations that help you shift from doing to being. You'll be invited to notice what you'd normally walk past, engage all of your senses slowly, cultivate presence, rest in reciprocal relationship with the land, and let your nervous system genuinely settle.
Research-supported benefits include reduced stress and lower cortisol, stronger immune function, enhanced mood and focus, greater mindfulness, and a deepened sense of connection and belonging.
You don't need to be outdoorsy. You don't even need a forest.
Your nature setting might be a city park, backyard, balcony, a favorite window, or a collection of shells and stones. Our sessions are held virtually, which means we each connect to the natural world near us, wherever we are. Walking is entirely optional. You can sit in one place, alternate movement with stillness, or engage from wherever your body is most at home.
As someone living with a chronic illness, I hold accessibility as a core value. If you have specific needs around movement, sensory experience, or environment, I’ll gladly work with you to customize your forest therapy sessions.
"The land had long been waiting for me to slow down, be present, and open up to a deeper relationship. Becoming a Certified Forest Therapy Guide (CFTG) was the nudge I needed to embrace that relationship and become more fully myself, grounded in reciprocity with the rest of nature." ~ Lori Cangilla, CFTG
The Root System Journey
Six phases of an evolutionary process. Grounding deeper into your relationships and seasonal rhythms, so that your life becomes Singularly Sensitive.
01Return
Step into a deeper relationship with the more-than-human world. Not as an idea; as an embodied experience. This is where the first exhale of genuine relief and possibility often lives.
04Relate
Nurture your web of relationships with kindred spirits and allies who will support your vision and your contributions to their lives. Organically grow a community to energize your growth.
02Root
Once your system has somewhere to land, you can hear the signals you've been overriding, the intuition you were trained to dismiss. Self-trust begins to return in your relationship with yourself.
05Recalibrate
Stop forcing productivity and linear growth. Learn to read your own cycles: what’s ready, what’s resting, what needs to end. Sustainable growth becomes possible when you align with your seasons.
03Refine
In the safety of mentorship, what had been unsaid can surface, be witnessed, and begin to take form. You name the your desired path with clarity and a growing sense of alignment and authenticity.
06Radiate
Stretching out like the forest canopy, your presence, clarity, and gentle joy are a beacon to yourself and others, showing what it means to live a Singularly Sensitive life. Your unique impact shines!
What Becomes Possible in the Root System
People come to the Root System carrying a particular kind of weariness. It’s the exhaustion that comes from a lifetime of squeezing yourself into a life that was never meant for you.
By the time people reach the end of six months, something has shifted. Not because they've radically overhauled their lives, but because they're finally allowing themselves to emerge in their most authentic form.
Here is what that tends to look like:
You stop overriding yourself. The signals you once dismissed as "too much" or "irrational" become information you know how to receive. You hear yourself, and you trust what you hear.
Your nervous system has somewhere to land. Through your relationship with the natural world, you discover a form of regulation that doesn't require you to white-knuckle your way through the day. You become genuinely calmer and know that when you get knocked off balance, you can get yourself back to center.
The exhaustion of performing begins to lift. As you practice living from the inside out, the energy that once went toward fitting in starts coming back to you. You feel more present in your own life and less interested in comparing yourself to what others are doing or expect from you.
You stop wondering if your way of being "counts." The quiet, deep, relational way you move through the world? You begin to embrace its beauty, rather than seeing it as a lesser version of how to be.
You find your kindred spirits and grow your community. You discover others who are building something similar alongside you. The isolation that has accompanied your sensitivity starts to ease and you realize that spending time with the right people, in the right ways, can be nurturing and pleasant, not draining.
You develop a compass you can trust. Gentle joy stops being an abstract idea and becomes a felt sense of what serves you and what costs too much. You’ll return again and again to gentle joy when you're deciding what's right for this season of your life.
This isn’t a linear transformation, and it isn't the same for everyone. It unfolds in the particular way your unique life needs it to.
What is true is that you’ll emerge both rooted more deeply and spreading out to grow into your next season.
The Root System ideal for sensitive people who…
feel the cost of existing in systems that demand disconnection, constant productivity, and rigid conformity
have outgrown frameworks that require them to shrink or harden themselves
are ready to move through the world in a way that is sustainable and that actually feels good to inhabit
are making an impact quietly and wondering if it “counts” or if they’re doing “enough”
are holding a vision they haven't fully spoken yet
are exhausted from contorting themselves into spaces that don't fit
You don't need more strategy. You need a different relationship — to yourself, to the world, and to what it means to make your particular contribution.
If you're uncertain whether the Root System is right for your circumstances or life situation can be accommodated, please reach out so we can talk though whether it would be a good fit for you and if this is the best time for you to take part.

Meet Your Mentor, Lori L. Cangilla, PhD., CFTG
My journey into forest therapy guiding work began just before my 50th birthday. I had spent years inside institutions — academic, clinical, professional — learning to translate my sensitivity into productivity. And while I was good at it, I was quietly exhausted by it.
I longed for the regular relationship with nature that had been so important to my well-being as a highly sensitive person growing up — but which had been replaced by long days in my head. So I enrolled in The Forest Therapy School and began documenting my journey from my home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. One subject — a broken tree on a nearby cliffside — became my teacher, my companion, and a mirror for my own transformation.
As I returned week after week to sit with that bit of land, I witnessed how both the landscape and I changed with the seasons. I wasn't just observing nature. I was in relationship with it. That relational process transformed me. Now I bring that experience to every person I work with. The more-than-human world is an extraordinary teacher of sustainable, attuned, rooted living, if we slow down enough to let it teach us.
My years as a psychologist have given me a deep comfort with companioning people through new experiences, strong emotions, and transformative passages. I bring artistic creativity, heartfelt presence, and mindfulness practice to this work, as well as a bone-deep attunement to the needs of highly sensitive people like me.
